Composite

The teacher composite combines each teacher's growth measures from relevant tests, subjects, and years to report a composite index and level (1-5).

In grades 3–8 in 2015–16, the state of Tennessee suspended testing for mathematics, English language arts, science, and social studies. Therefore, scale scores are not available for these assessments. As a result, the 2016–17 and 2017–18 TVAAS reporting in grades 5–8 for mathematics, English language arts, and science does not include 2015–16 test scores. For the 2020-21reporting year, there are three evaluation composites available for each teacher.

The 2020-21 composite includes value-added measures from the current year reporting (i.e., 2020-21).
The 2018-19 and 2020-21 composite includes value-added measures from the 2018-19 and 2020-21 reporting years.
The 2018-19 composite includes value-added measures from 2018-19 only.

A teacher who has data in both 2018-19 and 2020-21 does not receive a 2020-21 composite. Weighting within each year is by the number of students, then each year is weighted equally. For more information see section 6.1 in Statistical Models and Business Rules.

Math and ELA (grade 4), Science (grades 5–8 and Biology I), and Social Studies (grades 6–8 and U.S. History) are not included in teacher composites for the 2020-21 reporting year. More details about TDOE's policies are available at https://team-tn.org/growth-measures/.

The Evaluation Composite combines, where applicable, each teacher's TCAP and EOC value-added growth measures to report the associated index and level (1-5) across all assessments. For 2020-21, up to two of the following evaluation composites are available for each teacher: 2018-19 Composite; 2018-19 and 2020-21 Composite; 2020-21 Composite. Because the growth measures for each grade and subject or course are on different scales, it's not possible to provide a meaningful composite growth measure. However, growth index values across all grades, subjects, and courses are on the same scale, so they can be combined in an appropriate and meaningful way. As a result, you will see a single index value for the composite. This value incorporates both the growth of the teacher's students and the associated standard error.
